I Can’t Do It Without You!

Dear Donor,

It seems that nearly every hour of every day brings a new report of violence splashed across the headlines – violence born from layer upon layer of anger….domestic violence between members of a shared household, perhaps even a romantically involved couple….violence between strangers….violence against or initiated by a member of law enforcement, or by an angry ex-employee directed toward an employer or former colleagues. No place can be deemed totally safe from the potentially violent consequences resulting from uncontrolled anger. We see shootings in our schools, churches, shopping centers, bus stops, entertainment venues, and even while innocently watching television at home, and rage on our roadways. Educators, clergy, medical and legal professionals, or simply the average Jane or Joe – all of us experience anger. The difference is in how we, as individuals, are taught to respond to anger.

Anger and how it manifests in individual behavior is a product of generational programming. Much like modern AI systems can “learn” the correct response by repetition of certain inputs, the human brain accepts programming through the repetition of behavioral inputs. The parent's abusive or physically aggressive behavior is imprinted, copied, and passed to the child, who then through the reinforcement of behavioral repetition passes that same behavior to the next generation and the next. Without significant external influence being brought to bear, this multi-generational pattern can go on and on – parent to child, child to grandchild in an unbroken chain. The greatest fear for many is that the only significant agent of change may have to come at the harsh hands of law enforcement.

Of course, other emotionally damaging occurrences in life can also create anger issues and new triggers.  Rapes, kidnapping, and a disrupted family dynamic such as loss of custody, violence related to drug and alcohol abuse, and general parental or spousal disregard.

It was not by chance that I found a compelling need to create an impact and become the “kinder, gentler” agent of change for those unable to channel their anger properly. For the first eighteen years of my life, all I witnessed was anger and violence – the vast majority directed at me, and the remainder manifested in both verbal as well as physical abuse between my parents. Not a day went by when I was not in fear of my own life ending at the hands of one or both parents. By the time I was a young adult, I found myself wrapped tightly in a cocoon of anger – it was all I knew – but I was determined not to become like my parents and epitomize anger in motion. I clearly remember the day when I said “ENOUGH”!!!  It was the first step in the long journey that became my anger outreach program.

It is no secret, just with what we have already discussed, that the need for anger management has grown exponentially in recent years. It is a monumental undertaking to find all the little corners and pockets where it hides – often dormant until that fateful and sometimes horrific day. One major step in the process was the formation of our non-profit, M Walker Eastwood and Associates. Our programs are offered online, individually, and in group settings, and focus on the root causes -  the when, where, why, and how of anger, and to reprogram the way that individuals channel – even harness and reconcile anger – to help them build an awareness of the potential their anger has to bring harm to themselves and others and to make them kinder, more considerate and more empathetic.  Target groups include new fathers, new mothers, incarcerated adults and juveniles, and employee groups as part of a company EAP program.

Anger exists. It is a reality in our society and every country on the planet. The ultimate goal of our program is to impact as many individuals as possible in this country. To this end, I am asking for your support, financially and professionally. Please help us by letting friends, family members, and those you may know who are engaged in the judicial system, the school systems, health care professionals, and human resource managers, as we are always interested in strategic partnerships. Contact information is available on our website at  https://mwalkereastwoodandassociates.com
